Octopus Pi

Octopus Pi is a music company spanning a variety of projects, primarily unique events in independent spaces which emphasise the experience of the audience.

We are also a record label; visit OctopusPiRecords.com
for more.

O/π aims to support unsigned and independent artists, nurture the local underground music scene and provide opportunities to touring artists.

Projects range from events such as Wormwood and the spin-off Wormwoodstock Festival; Whatispsych, the double-12" vinyl compilation featuring eleven Sydney bands and Whyispsych the film-length music clip for the compilation, currently in production.

Octopus Pi is Kimberley Galceran with support from visual and concept collective Optic Soup and a bunch of like-minded, passionate, do-ers.

The emphasis is on fringe music and arts that stimulate.

The emphasis is on the experience.

    BURIED FEATHER
Melbourne acid-rockers BURIED FEATHER are heading up to Sydney in support of their debut record from earlier this year. Buried Feather have earned a reputation for delivering hypnotic live shows, with their signature blissed-out drones and hazy sludge drawing comparison with Dead Meadow and Spacemen 3.

    BUZZ KULL
Sydney’s own dark synth duo - Buzz Kull, will be performing all new material from their unreleased EP - “Heat”, after laying beneath the surface of the live scene since returning from a recent journey to America.

    FASPEEDELAY
Utilising guitar, bass and drums, Melbourne band Faspeedelay find a new space within the traditional 3-piece lineup, expressing influences from The Wipers and Dead Kennedys through to Can, Pink Floyd and beyond.

    SPIRIT VALLEY
Spirit Valley deliver a monstrous sound despite being a two-piece. Sitting on the very heavy end of psych.

THE ALL SEEING HAND HIT AUSTRALIA!

Mongolian throat-singing, turntables, frantic drumming and dissonance…
The All Seeing Hand blew crowds away at Camp A Low Hum and we welcome them to our fair(ly fucked up) land for their first and only Sydney show October 12th.

The All Seeing Hand is comprised of Alphabethead (masterful Turntablist gestated in the Hip Hop battle scene before branching into every direction at once, working everything from orchestral gamelan and Inuit folk music to post-punk and electronica into his compositions) Jonny Marks on vocals (a true sonic explorer, traditionally-trained Mongolian throat-singer and high-energy front-person) and B Michael Knight on drums (schooled in the energy of DIY punk and hardcore, tightly binding the whole sound together with driving rhythm that is equal parts chaos and precision).

These elements combine into a band of dissonant, dense beauty and intense live shows that leave observers in an ecstatic state of both wonder and confusion.

AN INTIMATE SHOW WITH A DEAD FOREST INDEX

    image

PRESS FOR A DEAD FOREST INDEX

'A unique blend of chemically infused vocal loops, dark minimalist drum beats and sparse, audacious guitar chords… They are at one time a chugging indie pop band; at another turn they blend Gothic rhythms and Eastern European symphonies; and around another corner they are a beautifully disciplined vocal group.' Einstein Music Journal

'The individual elements aren’t so unusual, but the way A Dead Forest Index arranges them makes it all seem unearthly. The same goes for this entire EP, a quick yet lingering introduction to one of our country’s most interesting young bands.' Mess+Noise

‘A Dead Forest Index never take these easy options, their songs are tightly wound, the tension increasing to breaking point, but the release never coming. It has the impact of keeping you on edge, waiting, waiting. To be able to hold this tension is a major, and uncommon, achievement.’ Cyclic Defrost

NO ANCHOR GET HEAVY IN SYDNEY

    image

Brisbane’s “doom sluggers” No Anchor are coming out after too bloody long, touring their album The Golden Bridge.
It sounds like this and feels like being punched a hundred times mid-orgasm (in this case that is a very good thing).

Supporting them are Making - somehow, always impossibly better than the last time you saw them; Thorax - without a doubt the best doom/punk band in Sydney, and Sour Cream - new doom/psych from members of Zeahorse.

The angry kid inside you will thank you…

    ADELAIDE’S SPARKSPITTER IN SYDNEY…

    image

Octopus Pi is excited to present an evening of rhythmic intensity and dynamic post-rock - SPARKSPITTER from Adelaide supported by MAKING and GOLDEN BLONDE - in an exciting new space…

    “GO SEE THEM”
    - The Scenery

"Formed from members of Adelaide pro-ballers Encarta, Thunderclaw, Strega, Oh My Guard, and Bronze Chariot, SPARKSPITTER have been sheering through the Adelaide music scene with a courageously original brand of catchy, math-infected, instrumental art-pop.

Having played alongside such acclaimed artists as Prince Rama (USA), Gold Panda (UK), Thee Oh Sees (USA), Love of Diagrams, Charge Group, Steering By Stars, Tiny Spiders, Coerce, Making and Civil Civic; performed at Fringe, Lost City, and Ocean Graves festivals; toured through Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Yogyakarta, Bandung, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore; and made appearances on Triple J and local radio stations throughout Australia and South-East Asia, SPARKSPITTER’s band trajectory, like their music, really does appear to harness some sort of cosmic energy.”

    Filming Whyispsych II in Newcastle

    image

This time Octopus Pi is taking it on the road to our friends in Newcastle! We’ll be filming the second installment of the upcoming feature-length ‘film clip’ WHYISPSYCH, for the WHATISPSYCH compilation; with four noisy, cerebral, post-rock Sydney bands we adore.
The show will feature exceptional lighting and visual displays tailored to each band.

Whether you’re from Sydney looking for a weekend away, or a Newcastle native looking for a good night out - this is the place to be.

FROM THE FUZZ-MINES OF PLANET SCRAPE

    image

Back from their recent European tour, Scattered Order are launching the album Planet Scrape with us on April 12th.

If you don’t know the history of this band do a little research, Scattered Order are easily one of the noisiest and most intense groups to come out of Sydney since they formed in 1979. Pioneering is an understatement.

With Pimmon, Nhomea and Dead China Doll in support this gig will be devastating in the best of ways.

    FILMING WHYISPSYCH - STOP MOTION

Heres a teaser from Part 1 of filming WHYSISPSYCH; one-minute, stop-motion footage in 30 second increments, edited by Tom Hethro of Optic Soup…

    WHYISPSYCH - THE WHATISPSYCH FILMTRACK

    image

Yet another project on the cards for Octopus Pi & Optic Soup…

    WHAT-? WHY-?
Along with our sister-collective Optic Soup, some film-making friends, a lighting genius, all the bands and YOU we’re going to make a ‘filmtrack’ for the WHATISPSYCH compilation.

WHYISPSYCH will span the compilation from start to finish and feature live footage mixed with Optic Soup visuals. We’re going to transform The Red Rattler with lighting, decor and projections like you’ve never seen. Each band will have their own concept and the audience will play a big part in the magic!

Join us on Saturday February 23rd from 8pm as we film:
